yes, the moon is hot... and cold... it depends on sunlight... just like the earth is warmed by the sun, so is the moon... the earths atmosphere helps regulate these temperatures, but the moon doesnt have an atmosphere... so, much like a desert... it is VERY hot during the day and VERY cold at night

As I'm a typical sci-fi geek, I vote for number 2. But be advised that it sounds rather like "Contact" by Carl Sagan. (An excellent book, BTW - well worth reading. And surprisingly, the movie adaptation is pretty good too.)

If you want to know which one you should write... write the one you would most like to read. Writing a novel is a long, lonely journey, with little prospect of a successful conclusion (publication). If you can't even enjoy the ride, what's the point?

There are a few trains about the world that use the technology of opposing magnetic fields to run trains around on a track. So if your idea is supposed to be far-fetched, with the floating magnetic cars be really far-fetched? Also, think of the price.
