The 1 inch equals 1 A.U. is a great idea. What you could do to represent the smaller planets is to put an arrow where the planet is (say Earth) and then hang the planet out in front of the orbit. Sort like a magnified view through a telescope.

You can also place the orbital paths along the diagonal of the board (corner to corner) to give you a little more room.
