Solar Panels Cost

Josephine Said:

how much do solar panels cost?

We Answered:

Currently, the average cost is about
$4/watt--about half what it was a few years ago. :)

so if you want a system with 1 kilowatt capacit, thats about $4000. That is a fair piece of change for most people--but it pays for itself in a few years. In addition, financing is easy to get--it is a home improvement that saves you money and improves the value of your home--banks just LOVE that!

There are a couple of othr factors to consider. first, the myth that solar isn't worthwhile except in areas like the Southwest are just that--myths. In other areas of the country they are not quite as cost-effective, due to more cloudy weather--but are still a worthwhile investment.

And--in some areas of the country (Calif, I know for sure) you can "sell" unused power back to the power company. In practice that means a credit on your bill for what power your system sends back when you aren't using it--which means you get th emaximum cost benefit, even if you're gone on vacation!

How much do solar panels cost?

We Answered:

I had a 3.75 kwh dc system installed on my home in CA. It cost $26K, but I only had to pay $16K because my utility gave me a $10K rebate and I will also get a $2K fed tax credit. Good news, the $700 billion bailout package increased the federal tax credit to 30% of the installed price. In my situation that would have meant a $7800 tax credit.

How much money does it cost to make ONE solar panel?

We Answered:

Just in case you didn't know, solar panels come in all sizes from big enough to run a calculator and costing a few pennies, to ones large enough to power a house and costing tens of thousands of dollars.

A very general rule of thumb: Small, single-PV-panel systems that produce about 75 watts can cost about $900 installed, or $12 per watt. A 2-kilowatt (1 kilowatt=1,000 watts) system that meets most energy needs of an extremely energy-efficient home can cost $16,000-$20,000 installed, or $8-$10 per watt. A 5-kilowatt system that completely meets the energy needs of many conventional homes can cost $30,000-$40,000 installed, or $6-$8 per watt.

first reference:
The $1 per watt price point has been a goal of the solar industry for a long time: First Solar announced that "it reduced its manufacturing cost for solar modules in the fourth quarter to 98 cents per watt". It's a bit unfortunate that it is happening to First Solar at a time when the economy is in bad shape and fewer people and corporations can afford solar panels, but it is nonetheless a great achievement.

How much would solar panels cost for our school?

We Answered:

depends on the size of the school. for a smaller building, maybe $8,000 but for a larger, up to $80,000. it honestly depends on the amount of power needed to run the building and the location of the building due to weather. its costly but the savings could make a difference in the long run.
