Solar Electric Power

Douglas Said:

How can I make an HPV with a solar powered electric motor on it?

We Answered:

Just put "solar power bike" in to any search engine and stand back. I got 1,260,000 references. I've included just one here!

Lonnie Said:

If the US are serious about global warming why don't they use solar powered electric chairs?

We Answered:

Electric chairs are hardly ever used here in the USA anymore. Too many eyeballs were popping out and startling the onlookers. Now, executions are done by lethal injection which seems counterproductive to me. Executions are supposed to be painful, no? Lethal injection is like drifting off to sleepy-sleepy land and never awakening.

As the Brits would say, "BOLLOCKS!"

Arthur Said:

How would I solar power an electric bike?

We Answered:

You have your units confused. A battery is rated in watt-hours, not watts. The one listed is "24V/10AH pack" which means it is a 24 volt battery rated at about 240 watt hours

So if you have a 20 watt solar panel and a 240 watt-hour battery, it would charge the battery in 240/20 = 12 hours. That's under ideal conditions, bright sunlight on the panel.

But there are lots of other factors to consider. Since your battery is 24 volt, you have to find a solar array that can put out 24 volts or higher. You will need a charge controller that will work with that array and with your battery set to control the charge into the battery.

Note that solar arrays put out little or zero voltage when not in direct sunlight. Also if even one part of the panel is in shade, the output will be zero.

Your comment about kinds of wires indicates you need a lot more knowledge before you tackle this.

Solar powered Electric water pump, float switch problems?

We Answered:

Hi James,

I've run into this so many times I've lost count. Your float switch has most likely died. I know this sounds unfair, but the average life of a float switch is about 2 years. When replacing yours, DO YOUR HOMEWORK ON-LINE to find the most dependable model available for your application.

I'm sorry, but without more information on the voltage/configuration of your system, I can't recommend one for you.

Nathan Said:

can solar batteries used to power electric fences be used to power other things?

We Answered:

Yes dear soul, it can be done via an "inverter" that changes the electrical charge from "Direct Current" (DC) to "Alternating Current" (AC).

Here is the site for the inverter store online. You will need to know the voltage being put out by the fence charger. However, your battery will go dead very quickly if it is an amperage hog (uses lots of electricity) I would expect you could run something like an AC radio, or perhaps a hand held appliance for a short time, the the batteries will go dead because the solar collector is not going to replace the energy used quickly enough to make this project worthwhile.

Sorry. You can do it, but is it worth it to run an AC appliance for one minute? Perhaps not.
