Project On Solar System

my thrd grader is working on a solar system project. how do i help him design an asteroid, comet, and star?

Blow up a balloon, paper mache. Flour, water & paper. You can make it whatever size you want by the size of the balloon you'll be using. The paper will determine the color. Have different colors at different stages of making your "pinata" like project. You could use food coloring for colors too, on tissue paper. Then layer it say -- yellow as the start then add darker colors letting some of the yellow show through or accept the color it makes by adding other colors on top. Or start with a darker color and go to lighter ones. This should be an easy way to get exactly what you're looking for.

Nasa has these wonderful papermodels of space ships. You might want to add one or some to your project. Take a look at this link, click on the picture of the space ship and up pops a pdf file of each one. They are printable, cut, paste projects.

Have fun and good luck.

What is the best way to make a 3 rd grade miniature solar system science project?

We Answered:

At 3rd grade, I would suggest you keep it simple and don't expect too much abstract thinking or scale. If the kids walk away with the basic idea that several planets orbit the sun and our Earth is one of them, then you taught them something. I like the idea of a mobile with paper and glue balls. Two crossed thin rounded wood rods with markings for planet position will give you 2 planets per arm, therefore 8 planets with the Sun at the center. Suspend the planets with string. The planets will need an anchor point, so make each planet with a string through the axis. Wire is not safe, best to keep the kids away from that approach. Styrofoam is very messy. Balloons will deflate quickly and their hard work will be lost. Drawing does not convey the 3d concept. Near enough is good enough with color. Try to get the order correct. Some kids have long memories, darn them. Let them take them home and hang them up when finished. Make one yourself and keep that in the class and make yours first so they have an example to copy, and you have the process worked out. Also show them pictures of the planets and explain the concept of moons. You can try to explain planet rotation and sunrise in the east, darken the room and use a fixed source of light for the sun and a large ball with a house taped to the side. Then rotate the ball. When their eyes glaze over, stop.

Check out this link, you'll be able to make the best solar system project, even print out pictures of planets never seen before!! Nasa discovered dozens of more planets. It will give every details you need.
