How Old Is The Solar System

Marion Said:

How old is the sun and how old is the Earth and how old is the solar system?

We Answered:

Sun, about 5 billion years
Earth, about 4.5 billion years
Solar system, about 4.5 billion years

Ricardo Said:

Why do some creationists claim moon dust disproves an old solar system?

We Answered:

Your Incorrect, if your were correct then it did not change the minds of the lunar lander designers. In the design stage of the lunar lander the legs and feet were designed for a much deeper amount of dust, this is common knowledge here. That's why Armstrong's statement is so famous 'one giant leap for man, one giant leap for mankind".

Jennifer Said:

how many "generations" old is our solar system?

We Answered:

Out sun (Sol) is a population I star.

The first stars were population III. They are all burned out and when nova (or supernova) a long time ago.

The next stars were population II. There are a lot of those still around. Then comes population III, like our sun.

Sylvia Said:

What would you say is the best way to test how old the solar system is?

We Answered:

Meteorites are better, because Earth rocks have been cycled through the mantle in the billions of years since its formation, and will not show as much geological age as meteorites which are pristine in comparison.

Deanna Said:

how old is the solar system?

We Answered:

Almost as old as Cher.

Nellie Said:

How old is the solar system?

We Answered:

The earth and the rest of our solar system are about 4.6 Billion years old.

Big difference between million and billion;) Your confusion is understandable though. Astronomy deals with such astronomical numbers it's hard to think about in human terms.

The calculation of galactic "years" is made by mathematical models involving natural laws and observable data not direct observation. Humans (and their math concepts and methods) have not been around long enough for that:)

Courtney Said:

How old is our solar system and when will our sun "die" ? In the process, will our sun become a dwarft?

We Answered:

our solar system is about 6.5 billion years old i believe. Our sun has an estimated life span of 11 billion years, so we have 4.5 billion years left.

Because of its relatively small size, as the sun nears its end, it will become a red giant, then puff off its outer layers relatively gently and what will remain will be a white dwarf.
