Pedro Said:

Does someone like me have a CHANCE at MIT?

We Answered:

After reading the first part of your list, with your scores and grades, I would have put you in the not-at-all-likely category for MIT. But as I read further, there were a few things that improved your chances, in my eyes. I like the fact that you have a number of science-based EC's and I like the fact that you finished math at your school and are looking to do it at a university. (By the way, you should absolutely put in things that you will do but have not done, but let them know they are things you will do... not things you have done. They will likely check to make sure you did do them after they accept you.) If you can get good grades in those math classes, that will help you a lot.

So do you have a chance? Yes you do. I would say you have a lot of sub-par statistics with a few bright spots. That means you have a slim chance and it will be an uphill battle. But if you put together a knock-your-socks-off essay and have outstanding letters of rec, you could make it. There certainly is hope. On the other hand, you have to realize that there will be a lot of applicants who have the bright spots you have, but have better grades and scores. Those guys will get accepted before you do. Whether or not you do will also get a spot depends on how many of those guys there are that year. I would recommend trying for MIT, but putting a lot of thought into what your fallback schools will be. Good luck and keep working on it!

If I were the last person on Earth What Would Happen?

We Answered:

No offense to Amanda, but I think you can learn a lot by thinking about this. If you are certain you're the last human, then it's reasonable for you to take an Epicurean philosophy: Eat, drink, and be merry, for tommorow you die. But while you play, keep an eye out for a potential partner to repopulate the species. Why not a Ferrari? You'll have plenty of gasoline at your disposal. You might need electricity or some other means to pump it. Recreational vehicles are designed to be self-sustaining, so use them. Move farther south, where food grows freely on its own. Visit Costco and store lots and lots of alkaline cells in a cool, dry place. Once you learn something about potable water, you'll find abundant natural sources, especially in Canada or unspoiled Western US. And think of more productive things to do with your remaining time than just listening to music.

How do Americans manage to use 25% of all the world's oil when we are but a tiny fraction of the world?

We Answered:

What about the consumption of the military and the government class?

Research just how much oil the bloated government uses before laying another unjust burden on the populace.
