Facts About The Solar System

Joel Said:

what are some of the facts about the solar system?

We Answered:

There is a medium sized type M-class star at the center, with no companion star. This is a rarity in star systems, since most appear to be part of a binary or tertiary system.

There are 8 distinct planets that orbit this star in elliptical orbits, all within a similar plane.

Between the fourth and fifth planets, Mars and Jupiter respectively, there is a ring of asteroids which also orbit the star. One of them, Ceres, is large enough to be considered a dwarf planet.

All of the defined planets have at least one moon except for Mercury and Venus.

There are several identified dwarf planets besides Ceres, further out than the eighth planets orbit (Neptune). These are widely considered to be part of the Kuiper Belt, which is similar to the asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter, but on a much larger scale.

Further out from the Kuiper Belt is what is known as the Oort cloud, which is believed to be spherical and contains the majority of comets that occasionally travel towards the inner solar system.

All four outer planets (Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune) are considered to be gas giants. They have no known surface, and are comprised mostly of hydrogen. The gas giants all have defined rings as well as a multitude of moons which orbit them.

The first planet from the star (Mercury) is considered a dead world, small and rocky with no measurable atmosphere.

The second planet (Venus) has a very dense atmosphere which causes its surface temperature to be the highest of all the planets. Clouds of sulfuric acid have been detected in its atmosphere.

The third planet (Earth) is the only planet known to have significant coverage of water. Due to its distance from the star and its content, it is the only planet so far identified to have life.

In need 2 facts about the solar system.?

We Answered:

The solar system consists of the Sun; the eight official planets, at least three "dwarf planets", more than 130 satellites of the planets, a large number of small bodies (the comets and asteroids), and the interplanetary medium. (There are probably also many more planetary satellites that have not yet been discovered.)

Traditionally, the solar system has been divided into planets (the big bodies orbiting the Sun), their satellites (a.k.a. moons, variously sized objects orbiting the planets), asteroids (small dense objects orbiting the Sun) and comets (small icy objects with highly eccentric orbits). Unfortunately, the solar system has been found to be more complicated than this would suggest:
there are several moons larger than Pluto and two larger than Mercury;
there are many small moons that are probably started out as asteroids and were only later captured by a planet;
comets sometimes fizzle out and become indistinguishable from asteroids;
the Kuiper Belt objects (including Pluto) and others like Chiron don't fit this scheme well
The Earth/Moon and Pluto/Charon systems are sometimes considered "double planets".

Sean Said:

what are four facts about the solar system?

We Answered:

The Solar System is the system that includes the planet Earth.

Its star is the Sun, also called Sol (hence Solar System).

There are 8 planets in the Solar System: Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune.

There are 5 offically designated dwarf planets: Pluto, Ceres, Eris, Makemake, and Haumea. Ceres is in the Asteroid Belt. The other 4 are in the Kuiper Belt, outside Neptune's orbit. These have the subclassification plutoid.

Know any amazing facts about the SOLAR SYSTEM, our UNIVERSE. AIRPLANES, etc, any/all??

OK.. I don't want to risk boring you to tears or giving the subject matter less than what it diserves... My favorite sites that fill my need in this venue are:

It gives the MLA reference to cite if you get the information from the website. It also tells who discovered the element so that you can go deeper into the history if you want.

Nelson Said:

who is the author of the children's book 15 Facts About the Solar System?

We Answered:

I tried everything, is it a very old book ? You will receive much better answers if you provide more details in your question, i.e if you knew them, such as the published year, etc ?

Try these and see if they help you.
