3d Solar System

Nancy Said:

What is the best way to make a 3D solar system (Earth/moon/sun only) for science project of a 8 year old kid.?

We Answered:

You can use styrofoam balls and paint them the colour of the earth, moon, and sun. You coud tie strings to them and hang them on shish kebab sticks. :)

I would use the foam balls instead of the tag paper. If you need to make it to scale this website might also help:

3D solar system computer programs?

We Answered:

Check out a program called 'Starry Night'.
It will allow you to check out the night (or day) sky from virually anywhere on Earth, and has the possibilty to lead you on a virtual tour of the solar system, the Milky Way, and far- off galaxies.
It's cool.

Best 3D solar system materials out there?

We Answered:

I have done this several times and it is a really great way to get people to understand how big and empty space is. Last time I did it I used a 10 inch basket ball for the Sun and a 1/10 inch pinhead 89 feet away for Earth. To used a 10 inch globe to be Earth the Sun will need to be 91 feet in diameter and almost 2 miles away. 91 feet is the size of the larger hot air balloons I think. If you really want to do that you might seek out some hot air balloon ride companies and arrange a tethered flight on the beach. See the source to calculate the sizes and distances for any scale you like.
