I heard a guy interviewed recently who heads a company making solar panels with a new more economical manufacturing process. But he said they don't really sell any in the US - most of it goes to Europe and Japan. Those places have more tax incentives for alternative energy and higher fuel taxes making solar more attractive. Not much market in the US which is a shame.

I'm putting an addition on my house soon and I think it would be great to put a solar panel on a flat roof section we'll have. But the cost is probably too prohibitive.

We Answered:

Solar panels are pretty durable pieces. Most panels I've worked with come with a 25 year manufacturers warranty so you shouldn't be worried as much about damage than keeping them clean. After it snows you should any frost coating off the panels as it may interfere with the efficiency of the panels. Only extreme weather conditions would damage the panels. Since they're purpose is to be outdoors, they're built to last.

It's almost like there was no change at all... almost like he will do whatever he can to make his approval numbers go up and win the independent vote.

We Answered:

No. Depending on what kind of panels you have, a relief valve could be hung open (if it got too hot), you could have a faulty panel, or the interconnecting piping could be compromised. Either way, the system should be looked at by a professional, because there should be some sort of antifreeze mixture in the panels to prevent freezing and boiling.
