Solar Powered Pool Pumps

Brittany Said:

pool pump what does this mean?

We Answered:

*What is the flow of the pump and pressure?

-240 Watt solar panel can not power your pump if it is running on full load capacity.
-Keeping power factor unity, your motor will draw [230*8.0] W which is quite more than your solar power panel.

Solar Powered Pool Filter/Pump?

We Answered:

This is not a practical idea. I don't know exactly how large of a motor it will take for a 18 foot pool, but I would imagine something between a 1/2 HP and 1 HP.

1 horsepower equates roughly to 750 watts.

You can see here that a 200 watt solar panel will cost you in the area of $1000 and you will be buying 3 or 4 of them...

not to mention problems like you will not be able to run your pool motor at night unless you also tie to the power line and this high cost item will completely go to waste, unless you are running your pool.

solar power, what i need for it to run my pool pump and other items around the house?

We Answered:

Many pools have a big pump, running fairly often, so these can be a big money saver (aside from the ecological benefits). So, there's lots of selection in solar powered pumps. http://store.altenergystore.com/Solar-Po…

If your pool uses the kind of small pump you normally find in decorative fountains, and you just want to pop it in the pool, and have it go, I'd look for a kit like this.

If you'd like to be able to power the important stuff in the house, solar is much better than a gas generator, and can pay for itself.
Here's a fairly simple, emergency generator style solar setup. You can plug things (like an ordinary pump, a computer, a cellphone charger) right into it. http://www.solarexpert.com/Generators/sw…

So far, I've tried to keep to systems that are fairly simple.
Your local solar experts can install custom systems for you as well. If you're planning on being in the same home for several years, they can really pay off. A custom system will lower or replace your electricity bills. They typically cost a few thousand dollars. http://company.solarbuzz.com/Consumer/Cu…

By the way, a few other yahooers have mentioned Solar Water heating. It's not relevant to your original question, but if you're curious, it's very nifty. Electricity isn't very good at heating, the sun can heat water much, much better. Of course, if your pool needs a heater, Solar water heating systems are by far the cheapest to operate. They can generate enough hot water to replace your home hot water heater, and heat the house. http://www.renewableenergyaccess.com/rea…

Solar In Ground Pool Pumps?

We Answered:

We sell the Lorentz Solar Pool Pump, http://www.altestore.com/store/Solar-Poo… The size of your pool and your location would determine how many solar panels you need, could be from 400 - 900W.

It's a fabulous way to cut down your electric bill, especially in such an expensive state as CA.

Solar activated power plug switch device needed?

We Answered:

Actually there is a pre-built unit offered at any Home Improvement center Lowes/Home Depot etc. in the lighting/outdoor section purchase a light operated sensor switch which has the relays already setup. Think of the automatic Floodlight switches sold separately for the lamps, light sensitivity is adjustable to very bright sunlight or dawn/dusk, the load wires will be your pump instead of the flood lamps.
Wiring diagram is included less than $20.00.
