Solar Powered Pond Pumps

Marjorie Said:

Is there a solar powered dc air pump available to aerate a pond?

We Answered:

You could easily make one but those solar panels are PRICEY!!! $400 for 50 watts which ain't much @ 12 volts

Betty Said:

solar pond pump for waterfall advice please?

We Answered:

As said, solar pumps are a fantastic idea, the bad point is, its only the idea that is good.

For a waterfall to work you need a lot of water, solar pumps are not up to it yet, and as said they need a lot of sunlight to work.

There is also a lot of difference between a pond pump and a waterfall pump. but again, the truth is solar pumps are not up to it for the average garden pond.

Mains pumps are fine, but you dont want a sump pump as they use a lot of energy to pump water in comparison to a dedicated fountain pump.

Edgar Said:

Do I need a constant water source going to a garden fish pond?

We Answered:

No and yes.
I have a pond that is not supplied by anything but rainwater. I also have a solar powered pump, very small but it oxygenates the water (along with an oxygenating plant) sufficiently enough to sustain 6 fish, tadpoles/frogs etc.
Do not top up with the hosepipe as tapwater is treated. Use rainwater froma rain water butt if it gets really low.
