Solar Powered Lanterns

Rebecca Said:

How do I charge up a solar powered yard lantern?

We Answered:

It depends no the type and name brand! Most of them ask that you turn it off for the first day to leave it charge and the the next day turn it on and then it should work that night and keep working with out being touched for months. If you have cheap solar light then you more than likely will need to keep it in some place were it can get sun everyday, as most need direct or indirect sunlight to keep charged and working. They say you should replace the solar batteries once a year but most people don't do that! Good luck.

Can I make one outdoor lamp solar ??

We Answered:

there are photocells that could be installed in series with you light that would make it function as a night light to where it would only come on at night automatically, but it would still run off of electricity this way. as far as setting it up to be a solar light, it would be alot cheaper to just buy a solar light. i mean it is possible to do it , me being an electrician i can say this, but you are looking at having a finagled up mess by the time you are done, and the hours involved in getting it running right would be enormous. i mean it's like putting nitrous oxide on a chevette, it doesn't make a whole lot of sense. why don't you put the light in a different area if you don't want to get rid of it, and buy a new light for out front, one that resembles the one you have already and save yourself some time and money. many really nice lights can be bought fairly inexpensively on ebay or there are several web sights where you can find them. i know you were wanting to keep your existing light, but it is not very economical, i would just relocate it and replace the one out front. hope this helps at least a little.

What's the best way to remove old rusted screws?

We Answered:

Hacksaw, grind, or file off the screw heads. Use a hammer and punch to drive the screws into the pole. Then use some larger screws in the outsize holes.

Never mind the neighbors thoughts. Some day they will need your genius to bail them out of a problem.

What is the point in a solar powered torch?

We Answered:

I prefer the squeeze grip flashlights for emergency use. The ones where squeezing them spins a dynamo to charge capacitors. With LED lights, those capacitors can keep it lit for a very long time with just a few squeezes.

The solar powered ones presume that you're camping and would have it out on the camping table through the day for charging. If you actually had it with you, say in a pocket or in the glove compartment, that would be pointless.

Cigarette lighters on motorbikes are useful to plug in a GPS or to charge your phone. I don't smoke so the ashtray in my car just carries the cigarette lighter so that I can plug in my accessories.

Sliced bread saves you from hunting down the bread knife all the time besides it's going to be sliced anyways.

I have solar lanterns and not enough sun most days to chartge them?

We Answered:

Yes, if they have AA NiCd or NiMH batteries in them, you can take those batteries out and charge them in a standard charger.

If your lanterns are consistently not lighting, though, try cleaning the solar cell, or moving the lights to a different location. Our solar lanterns are still working well at this time of year - it's only with the December rains that they might stop working.
