Solar powered garden lamps?

We Answered:

I think that making lanterns out of them is your best bet. (Thanks for the idea.) The panel replacements usually cost more than the lights. In the next couple of months, Target will end cap the solar lights. You can get them for a great savings.

Does A Solar Powered Light (or lamp) Need A Battery?

We Answered:

When electricity is generated (by the solar cells in this case) it can either be used immediately, or stored for use later. You could build a solar powered lamp that only works when the sun is shining directly on it. But that wouldn't be very useful, would it? Better would be a lamp that can absorb power from the sun during the day and then light up at night when there's no sun. And to do that you need some way to store the power in the meanwhile. So the solar cell charges a battery and the battery powers the lamp.

Unless you are going to have the lamp only light up when it's absorbing energy in the sunlight, you're going to need a battery in the design.

Can I swap out 1.2v 400mAh rechargeable batteries with 1.2v 2500mAh rechargeable batteries in my solar lamps?

We Answered:

The only problem you will have is that the charger circuit for the battery in the solar lamps will not have the capability of putting much of a charge on the 2500mAh batteries, as they would with a 400mAh type. The internal charger is capable of charging the smaller rated batteries a higher percentage rate than it would for the larger rated batteries.
