Road Transportation Emerges as Key Driver of Warming - thoughts?

We Answered:

Interesting article, but ...

What was that line from Watergate? "Follow the money?" Here the line should be "Follow the carbon"

CO2 has the longest atmospheric half-life of all of the gas/aerosols mentioned in the article. (And one of the major decay lines is it absorption by the ocean which is affecting the ph). The biggest short-term emitters of CO2 are industry and power -- not transportation. That's why the number one and two long-term drivers of atmospheric warming are industry and power.

Transport produces a lot of short lived gas and aerosols which, at least at this point in time, have roughly the same effect on atmospheric warming as the long-term to date CO2 emissions created by the transportation system. However, those other transport gases and aerosols are currently in rough equilibrium. The amount breaking down is equal to the amount produced. If the transportation system completely broke down, these other atmospheric warming gases and aerosols would relatively quickly degrade leaving only the transport created CO2 as a driver of atmospheric warming.

In contrast, industry and power produce a lot of short lived gases and aerosols which have a negative effect on atmospheric warming. Thus in the short term they are deemed a lesser driver of atmospheric warming. However, turn them off tomorrow, and the short term gas and aersols would degrade and they would be deemed the two primary drivers of atmospheric warming.

In the long term the increase in atmospheric CO2 is cumulative, but the other gases and aerosols are maintained at an equilibrium constant. Therefore the primary producers of CO2 such as industry and power are deemed the primary long-term drivers of atmospheric warming.
.........

Notes:

Notwithstanding, the fact that transport creates a large amount of short-lived gas and aerosols that drive atmospheric warming has some benefits. If we can better control the O3 and NOx, we can make a dent in the short term driving of atmospheric warming. However, this would have a limited effect on the long term.

I won't even go into methane farting ruminants, dung burning and other sources of CO2 and/or methane. Too complicated for Y!A. Just remember that unlike the burning of fossilized hydrocarbons, these sources will reach equilibrium levels and have a limited effect on the long term.
.........

Bottom line, controling CO2 (or devising an effective way to remove it from the atmosphere and make something useful like cement) is the only way to limit long term atmospheric warming. However, focusing on some of the short lived gases and aersols that also drive atmospheric warming would have some short term benefits.
