I live in India - Tamilnadu - Coimbatore. I have installed a Solar water heater on my roof top about 15 years back. It is working fine. I have saved a lot on water heater electricity bill.
About six months back I have bought a fully automatic front loading washing machine. It has options for washing cloths at 40 deg and 60 deg celsius etc. I have connected solar water tap to the inlet to the machine. I do washing during noon. My savings have increased. Because of higher temperature of inflow water, the time required for washing is also lowered.

We Answered:

Using passive solar is good. Passive solar is where you use the homes siting to optimize the amount of sun that can enter through windows.

Adding solar water heaters at lower latitudes is good. You can heat water to take care of heating domestic water and some heating of the home.

Solar electric panels are extremely expensive and you can buy power from the utility company much cheaper.
