Hi there: what a great endeavor you are taking on. Just a few pointers here. Green-ness goes way beyond recycling and composting. Green-ness is also about the chemicals the school chooses NOT to use (such as pesticides, herbicides, bleach, "anti-bacterial" wipes, etc.) and just how the school goes about building / updating its physical plant: no-voc paints and caulk and flooring that does not off-gas, for example. The larger question, really, is how does the school spends its money. There is an ethical decision to be made with every pound (or dollar in our case here) spent: where does this good/service come from? Are there fair trade/fair labor practices involved in its production or is it the putcome of exploitation? How will its use affect staff and students? And how will our purchasing this affect the Earth? All of this takes a lot of effort in research to really understand the issues. The more you know about how goods and services are produced, the more daunting you will likely find it all.. and the more determined, hopefully, you will become to keeping-it-Green. Our communities are not green at all, yet, but the more individuals and institutions choose to BUY GREEN, the more industry will have to transform.
