They need the sun to work. The occasional cloudy day is not biggie. They just run on electricity that day.

If you live in an area with little sunshine, it won't work for you.

A steel flat central heating radiator painted black and put in a box, glass on front and insulated will heat water when on a wall or on the roof.

We used to sell Anu Solar Water Heaters in the past but switched on to TATA BP as we found that over a period, the performance reduces & vis-a-vis TATA BP system, the quality is not that good...

In a word-yes. But when you consider the use of 'dirty' energy needed to manufature and transport a standard water heater that doesn't provide ecological benefits after its put in use, you are better off using the solar water heater.
