Drawbacks?
Well the initial installation is expensive.
It's a 'long payback' investment.
(Money-wise you won't be 'into the black' for some years unless
energy costs rise steeply.)
They are a 'maintenance' item.

But especially with the Gov'ts 'giveaway' programs now coming online,
you get considerable financial help with the installation and they're
extremely 'Politically Correct' at the moment.

Are you going to make solar panels from scratch? Good luck.

The rest of the answer depends on your application. For example, if you are going to use the power right away, then you hook it up to your device. But if you need to power stuff at night - like lights, then you need a battery, a way to prevent the solar cells from draining the battery, like a diode, a way to turn on the device, like a timer, and so on. Match the solar cell out put to the battery.

If you're going to power your house, and you want excess power to go to the grid, you need significant converters to get the power into whatever is common for your house, like 120 volt 60 Hz A/C, and converters to the grid. These are expensive, i hear.

It sounds like you have an east facing roof and a west facing roof. DO NOT hook the panels from one roof to the panels on the other roof. The side that is getting the shade will cancel out the power that you are getting from the side that is getting the sunlight. You would put a string (array) on each roof. Best to get two smaller inverters one for each side. In the morning the first inverter and solar array would start up and feed power to the utility and at noon both arrays would be feeding power and in the after noon the first inverter would shut off and you would be powering from the array on the west side.

Your electric bill don't tell me anything at all.. How many kWh per month do you use. You really need to read the web page above and the three links on the page. It will tell you step by step how to plan your system and would only take you about an hour of your time.
