Solar Panel Homes

Marcus Said:

what does a single solar panel weigh?

We Answered:

The solar panels that are typically used in home power systems weigh between 40 and 50 lbs each. Some of the thin film products and solar shingle products weigh less, but usually require more square footage of panel to get the same power output.

Areas that get a lot of snow usually have building codes requiring very sturdy roofs. Some areas require a roof that supports 100 lbs per square foot or more. I have worked with solar in snowy areas, and have yet to find a proper roof in these areas that will not support an array of solar panels. If your manufactured home passed inspection, you are likely OK.

The trick is to make sure that your solar panels will shed the snow as quickly as possible after the snow storm so you can keep generating power. E-mail me at wholesunsolar@yahoo.com if you would like some ideas on how to do this.
