It works like a semiconductor where sunlight knocks electrons loose and creates holes. This creates an electrical current in the semiconductor. You might want to review photovoltaics and semiconductors to understand solar cells.

solar energy is transferred into heat, especially air. If you have a large greenhouse tower (like a tower made of glass) with an open top, the air inside will heat up and it will rise to the top and out where the cooler air is. If a turbine (like a windmill) is placed at the top end, the air will spin the turbine to create electricity.

They use what's called a photodiode. It's a semiconductor made mostly from silicon. photons from the sun strike the material and excite the electrons in it.

the electron is moved from a valence energy level, (where it takes part in bonding the material together) to a level where it breaks free of the valence and is allowed to flow freely.

The electron flows through the material, and the hole it left behind is filled with an electron form the atom next to it, thus the hole flows in the opposite direction and is filled in at the outer most extremity by a free roaming electron from space.

In this way an electrical current flows through the material.

Solar or light can be converted into current and batteries can be made at a smaller scale. Example is, small calculators are powered by solar cells.

As for as construction of those batteries they are made of smaller cells and then smaller cells are joint with other smaller cells to make little large cells. Its very expensive to make them on commercial level thats why we are addicted to oil.

Cheap things sometimes don't come cheap.
