HOW MUCH ELECTRIC DOES ONE SOLAR PANEL PRODUCE?

We Answered:

You didn't ask for units - power or energy?

A typical single rooftop solar panel will produce around 200W (power), when properly oriented, under bright direct sunlight. The rating you see for a panel like this is done by the Solar Rating and Certification Corporation (SRCC).

(200W = as much power as required by 2 100W incandescent light bulbs, for example).

That's power. Energy is power over time, measured in watt-hours or kilowatt-hours (kWh). 1000 watts generated for 1 hour is 1 kWh. You purchase electricity in units of kWh.

So the amount of energy produced by a solar panel depends on how many watts it produces, for how long. That in turn depends on the size/efficiency of the panel, its orientation, sunlight conditions, etc.

If you're interested in how much energy a solar array might produce over a year's time, look at the pvwatts calculator at http://rredc.nrel.gov/solar/calculators/…

From that calculator, a 5 x 200W panel array (a 1kW array), hooked to a 77% efficient inverter, in Minneapolis, pointing south, at a 45 degree tilt, would produce about 1286kWh in a year, or about $100 of electricity.
