Materials For Solar Panels

Franklin Said:

How much CO2 is produced when solar panels are manufactured?

We Answered:

From here http://www.nrel.gov/docs/fy04osti/35489.… I get that 1 kW of panels needs 4000 - 6000 kWh of energy for its manufacture and distribution. The article suggests an energy payback time of 1-4 years, but the article is old, and contemporary panels are more efficient in their use of materials.

The equivalent in CO2 depends where that energy came from in the first place. If it was from a nuclear or hydroelectric plant, then the CO2 is nil. If it was from a coal-burning plant, figure 1.5 lbs. of CO2 per kWh

Brandon Said:

Are solar panels envirommentally-friendly?

We Answered:

Most solar panels are over 90% recyclable now. They produce (if in a sunny place) as much energy as is used to produce them in a year or two. They will pay for themselves, without any subsidies in certain locations within 12-20 years, then they give free clean power. NO energy company will ever stop charging you after you've been with them 12-20 years.

Solar power?

We Answered:

You'd better do some homework. You'll spend a whale of a lot more than 1900 doing enough solar for a shop.

Try adding a zero to that figure!
