As mentioned in the two previous answers, the solar panels can be folded up and so even through they are quite large when they are fully deployed, they are compact enough when they are folded up that they can easily fit into the cargo bay of the space shuttle.

The solar panels that we commonly see used here on Earth can not be folded up because they are rigid structures and so perhaps this is why you asked your question. Perhaps it would be helpful for you to watch the video that I've linked to below. It will show you how the solar panels are unfurled.
