The size of the solar panel will be determined by a few factors. The key factors will be the capacity of the battery bank (in Amp Hours), how quickly you want the solar panels to recharge your batteries, and also what your solar resources are. You can still use batteries to store your energy produced by the solar panels, just make sure to use "deep cycle" batteries and not car batteries. Deep cycle batteries are designed for a continuous slow discharge and recharge over the course of a day (perfect for solar applications). Car batteries are designed to provide a very quick discharge of a lot of captive energy (in order to start the car's engine) and are also designed to be quickly recharged by the car's alternator.
