It sounds like the sensors aren't getting enough light (or maybe a shadow is being cast) that signals for it to illuminate it's light. Also, maybe the sensors have dirt or dust that makes for a dark sense from the light as well. Try cleanig off the top of the soensor panel, and move the light away from any shade that may be present. Also, try swapping the light with another that appears to work correctly and see if there is a difference.

There are a couple of options - installing a new battery that's higher capacity could result in it giving a brighter charge, or lighting for significantly longer periods. I've found the solar lights that I've bought have all had low quality batteries that were possibly the cheapest the manufacturer could supply. If they're AA size, try a 2700 mah type battery instead, as they often ship with 800 or less.

Or supplementing one light with an additional light should increase the overall brightness too - realise that this potentially doubles your cost, but it saves the investment that you've already made, and perhaps the 2nd light could be a cheaper version.

There are a variety of pole or post mounted solar lights out there. Depending on the style of post you have, you could hang a carriage light or install a post topper.
