Outdoor Garden Lighting

Alice Said:

I recently fitted an outdoor light to a garage, can I add a switch to it?

We Answered:

just disconnect the switch leg running to the motion sensor and install a single pole throw switch..

Ruben Said:

bright lighting for outdoor party?

We Answered:

Bright clear christmas lights give off a surprising amount of light and when placed strategically, they can be very pretty. They are cost effective, especially if you already have them or can borrow some!

Otherwise, if you hang lanterns here and there it would look nice.

Good Luck!

Timothy Said:

is there an outdoor socket that will take a 12v adapter?

We Answered:

Naw, you have to put the socket(s) in a weatherproof box.

Wiring a outdoor light?

We Answered:

Maybe one of the cables is your supply (L, N & E) and the other is a switchline (L, SL & E). Usually one of the black conductors is the return from the switch. Trace the cables back to the grey box, to establish which is the supply cable and which is the switchline.

If this seems correct, you connect your new light to the two black conductors only, using the supply black conductor as the neutral and the switchline black conductor as the switched-live. Wire the brown wire from the new light to the switched live terminal and the blue wire to the neutral terminal. Connect all the earths together and both red conductors together. Mark the black switched-live with red sleeving so that you know for next time what it is.

The only other thing I can think of is that the old light had a sensor on it and no light switch.

Adding garden spotlight to existing light circuit?

We Answered:

No it isn't safe.
Install a class 2 spotlight (non-metal/double-insulated) or supply an earth.
