I guess it depends what you pay for them, then...We bought some 6 years ago for about £6.00 each...Had to place the rechargeable batteries (2) in them for 48 hours before switching on, so they got charged up in the daylight. They are all with the original batteries, and are still going perfectly. Later we bought some more on a Bogof offer, but these were inferior in as much as they only used one battery each, so the power was not as good, thus the light was weaker. They are still working though, and have not had any problems with them.

I have never heard of any law against it. It is fairly common here in Southern California.
