Check that the batteries for insulation. Also look for an on/off switch which some solar lights have.

Best to turn them on during the day, then off (or remove the batteries) over night, then on again (or replace the batteries) the next morning to give them a couple of days charge before the first use of the lamps over night.

You were misinformed. You can make a solar heater out of a copper mirror, and warm water, but not a solar voltaic cell to generate electricity, which requires a complicated manufacturing process.
