Wind Power For Your Home

Virginia Said:

Do you think viable fuel sources are being withheld because they haven't figured out a way to charge us for it

We Answered:

It's not easy to obtain and efficient to operate that's why we don't have it.

Finding a way to charge someone for it is the easiest part of the equation.

What is the best wind turbine (windmill) for private use, such as powering your home?

We Answered:

There are several quality ones depending on how much of your energy you want to get from the turbine. Check your energy bill or call your power company to find out what your monthly use is. (mine is about 800kw hours/month)

The Skystream 3.7 will probably cost about $ 15 - 20,000 installed and will make about 400kw hours/ month in 12 mph winds. www.skystreamenergy.com

The Bergey 10kw will be about $45 -50,000 installed and will produce about 1000kw hours /month. www.bergey.com

The Jacobs 31-20 will be about $60,000 installed and would be about 2000kw hours/month. www.windturbine.net

the Skystream and the Bergey are low maintenance, the Jacobs needs oil changes and greasing once or twice a year which you do need to climb the tower to do. It only takes about an hour and it is nice to get a different perspective on the surrounding area once in a while. These are all grid tied systems that work with the power company so you do not have to have batteries to store the energy for calm days.

How does wind power for homes work, and do you have to rewire your home to use it?

We Answered:

In the context of the home, you usually cannot generate power at stable enough voltage and frequency for reliable use.

So what they do is to generate DC (Direct Current) power, and then this is fed into an inverter, which converts it to AC at your supply voltage and frequency. The inverter is an electronic unit. Sometimes, there can be a battery banka as well, so that when everyone else is blanked out, you stll have power.

You will have to have some connection made to the house wiring, so this needs to be done by a registered electrician.

By the way, in principle, the same applies to solar energy panels.

Whats the cheapest power source to use for your home?

We Answered:

I think Americans should have to produce 1/10 of their own power by riding a stationary bike. This will fix two problems.

If you look into it solar and wind are not all that practical.
Sure get a windmill. It can produce enough to power a single light bulb and you paid 5K to have it installed.

Solar is still a good source but again the cost out weighs the benefit.

Ive looked into both.

I would vote gas or coal as the cheapest thats why we have used them in the past.
