San Francisco? One of the concerns there would be how much average sun you get each day. I'm only 50 miles south of you, but we rarely get fog, here.

Do consider a solar water heater - those are cheap, not finicky about shadows and partial sun, and should pay back quickly.

I'd suggest asking professional installers in your area for a free, no-obligation quote. They will look at your roof, and point out any weaknesses, such as shadows from nearby buildings, trees, or obstructions such as vent pipes. You can also get references of installs near you, then go ask those references how well it worked out, and how much energy they really harvest.

I think Borrego Solar is up in Berkeley, not far from you, but there should be a dozen different companies within that range.

Regarding the taxes, if you go for the install, get it done now, and get your California rebate reserved at the higher level. Just don't formally bring the system on-line until January 2nd, 2009. The amount of energy you forfeit by leaving the system off for 2 months will be more than offset by the thousands of extra federal tax credit you get by waiting.

Solar roofing tiles - what is your experience?

You need to get a quote from somone in your area. There are just WAY too many factors that affect the cost of solar panel installation.

We have a 90 year old spanish tile roof but I want to put up solar panels. Any bulkless solar framework.?

We Answered:

I have successfully installed solar panels on a concrete tile roof using only stainless steel or galvanised wire to secure the panels to the wooden rafters under the tiles.

Each panel with its aluminium frame is mounted directly on top of the tiles, after the wires are run under the tiles by gently lifting them and pushing them back down again. I used 2 sets of wires for each panel, one at the top and one at the bottom passed through holes drilled in the aluminium frame, and none of the wires were visible when the job was completed.

The gauge of wire required would depend on wind loadings etc. but panels installed this way have been operating successfully without problems for 15 years.

Another advantage of the tiles is that the electrical output wires can also be passed under them into the attic cavity without using any sealants and without compromising water tightness.

Edit: Once the panels are positioned on the tiles, the wires are twisted to tension them, and to prevent any future panel movement, before securing the wires to the rafters. Very simple, and it works!
