Solar Home Generators

Vernon Said:

Does anyone have any leads on backup solar generators?

We Answered:

I've just started looking at solar myself, here's a link to a site that seems to have some reasonably priced systems:

Maybe there will be information that will help, I'm a novice myself so I'm not sure what exactly you are looking for.

Where can I find a solar electric generator to use in a home in a building?

We Answered:

What does "home in a building" mean? Is this a condo?

You will need access to the roof, and the condo association will have to give you permission to install the solar array.

Just search the internet for "solar array" and you will find hundreds.

Your first decision is: batteries, with the chargers and all that entails, OR sell power back to the power company.

The latter is best as it eliminates all the batteries, chargers, etc. And you can get a smaller size array. You need to talk to the power company about their requirements to let you do this.

Your second decision is, how big an array can I afford.

If you go with the batteries, next decision is number and type of batteries, and where they are stored. You have to pick an inverter, and decide how to integrate it with your other electric power, possibly with a separate set of outlets (selling power to the electric company eliminates all this)

etc etc.

How do I get started with solar/wind generators in the home on a budget?

We Answered:

solar arrays are quite expensive and the payoff period is measured in decades.

Re the link, 45 watts is not much. It will power 1 or 2 CFL lamps, that's all, and that is when the sun is shining. and exactly at right angles to the array. Typical output is probably half that.

You will need a charge controller, and one or more large sealed marine lead acid batteries, as well as an inverter. A good charge controller is essential, as the voltage and current output of a panel varies a lot. A good charge controller has a DC-DC converter that presents the optimal load to the panel to get the maximum power from it, and converts that to the right DC voltage to charge the batteries.

Is the usage of Wind Powered Generators & Solar Generators Illegal in Singapore?

We Answered:

Its sad that Singaporeans should ask such questions. We are so timid. At the very worst you get a fine for installing green equipments. Take a MRT ride where you can see many terrace houses. You will find many with solar roofs.Their owners are not languishing in Changi prison. As for wind power, Singapore is not windy whole year round. Best stick with solar panels.
