Because the conservatives are led by elitist rich people who have brainwashed them into doing whatever they wish. If we become energy independent, a lot of rich people are going to lose a lot of money. The elitists who truly run things don't want that, so they've convinced their poorer followers that solar energy is bad, and oil is good. The poor don't realize that if we stop buying oil, we'll defeat these Muslims. The rich...just don't care, as long as their wallets are full, and they keep the poor under their control, to vote against measures that would end, or at least hinder, their plutocratic reign.
