There are so many confusing pages on the net about this subject I suggest you start with this site where there is a lot of info and a forum plus lots of links.

Basically, solar energy can be derived from two sources, the heat and the light.
The former can be used to heat water or directly in solar ovens for example and the heat then used to drive other systems if there is enough energy such as solar furnaces which can melt metals or the heat used to drive a generator and make electricity. Obviously these work best in hot countries more than Northern temperate ones.

The second system, known as 'photovoltaics' (sometimes shortened to PV), uses crystals that react to light and as the light passes through the crystal matrix electrons are stimulated into moving producing current which can be used to charge batteries or fed directly into the National grid.

This simplifies the subject into it's basic form and if you want to know more then google 'photovoltaics' and 'solar water heating'.

A quick look on sites like e-bay will show what is on offer and sometimes gives detailed explanations of how these products work which may help you.

If you are still lost and need help then mail me and I will try and help further as I use photovoltaics and will heat water using solar as soon as I have the funds so have a good knowledge of the subject.
