Since the majority of a home's energy use is for hot water, heating and airconditioning and would be provided for by solar thermal collectors, you would only need a small photovoltaic system.

if you are looking for a novel with much technology in it, you can read "Little Brother" or "Artemis Fowl". these are good and exciting books, but if you need kind of an instruction book, I can´t help you.

They are connecting to the 'grid' for two reasons.
1. if for some reason they cannot produce enough energy for their home needs(this is the case with most windmills and solar panels)

2. when they produce more than they need it turns their electrical meter BACK and at the end of the month they can SELL the electric back to the electric co. at a reduced rate.
-windmills and solar power are both good ideas but take YEARS to see a profit through cost savings. Remember both these options don't last forever and are EXPENSIVE to buy and install.
When you finally start making a profit you will then need to buy another unit.
