Solar power (photovoltaic or "PV") cells are silicon wafers that are 'doped' so that when sunlight hits them, electrons are knocked loose to create electrical current. They usually provide very little voltage (1.5 to 2.5 volts), but are connected in series to step the voltage up to 24V.

The array of cells is usually connected to an inverter, which changes the 24V direct current (DC) into 120V alternating current (AC) that we are used to in the homes.

The home is then either also tied to the grid in a "grid tie" system, so that power is available at night or when it's cloudy. Off-grid systems uses charging systems and batteries to store the power for use at night or during cloudy periods. However, adding batteries and chargers vastly increases the cost of the system (most due to maintaining and replacing the batteries).

CSP generally refers to solar thermal installations but all solar energy must be concentrated. Photovoltaic energy is concentrated by placing them in a series.

A power tower has mirrors
A parabolic dish has the dish

a solar chimney concentrates the energy in a chimney
a solar pond concentrates the energy without mirrors....

In general insolation is fixed. Only so much energy strikes the Earth.1 If the reflecting surface is not on a tracking mechanism it will be at some angle to the sun which will reduce efficiency. The reflection has a certain efficiency based upon the quality of the reflection and the surface. The focus has a certain efficiency. The more narrow the focus the more the energy will be concentrated.

Let's say that the particular area has a 5 Kwh / sq meter / day insolation value for your type of tracking concentrator. Your reflection and concentration is 95% efficient and you have 20 sq meters of surface. Your target will be receiving (5 x 20) x .95 or 95 kwh of energy each day.

Now what are you heating? A cup of water or a 500 gallon per minute pipe of running water? 1 kwh = 3412 BTU. 1 BTU is the energy needed to raise 1# of water 1 deg F.

Contact your local government agency dealing with building permits. They can tell you all of the requirements. You may be interested to know that many places require utilities companies to buy up the excess power you generate. Thus, at the end of the month you receive a cheque from the untility company rather than a bill.

Generally, in order to generate usable power from heat you need something cold too. The power generated by a device (such as a stirling engine) is generated due to the difference in temperature between the hold and cold sides. The cold gets heated in the process.

Once you reach about 5 meters below the surface (underground) then, the temperature is the average of the year's temperature. Making a device, such as a stirling engine, running from this far below ground to the surface would generate some power when the temperature is much different than the average, but not much.

Generating electricity solely from atmospheric (around us) heat is like a holy grail of energy production. The device would just cool the air (taking its heat) and give us usable power. We can do it at over 1,500 degrees kelvin (with a "Thermonic Converter", but that's hardly atmospheric temperature.

Nuclear power plants can be built almost anywhere, very safe, very reliable, small environmental impact. Nuclear power plants can operate 24 hrs a day 340 days a year. A very small amount of fuel produces a large amount of energy without producing any greenhouse gasses, particulate or other pollutants.
