Why can't Americans think outside the box? They can, but acting outside the box is the challenge. Our current lifestyle based on high oil consumption is so comfy.

Take a step back and re-examine the 'box'. Rather than spend mega-bucks on alternative resources to meet current energy needs, spend lesser amounts on increasing the efficiency of the electrical equipment inside the building.

New high efficiency T-8 fluorescent lighting can reduce the connected wattage by 30% or more. If the fixtures are being replaced, look at the T-5 lighting options. Task lighting at desks can allow the overall illumination source to be turned off in offices when unnecessary.

Occupancy sensors can automatically turn off lights when spaces are empty. Make sure outside lighting is not only efficient (and necessary - much is purely decorative), but equipped with a photocell so it doesn't operate in the daytime (you would be amazed and appalled by how much is on during daylight hours).

Heating and A/C equipment should be well-maintained and when age becomes an issue, replace it with newer, more efficient equipment.

Use computers with higher efficiency power supplies and monitors.

These kind of tips can reduce a buildings energy use by 10% or more much less expensively than providing 10% through alternative resources.
