I wish with all my heart it were so.....I love the Philippines..... But we have won the dubious honor of being the most corrupt nation in Asia several times and most of the other times we came in second.... Almost 30% of every peso spent by the government is lost to corruption.... Six out of ten law enforcement officers are paid below "national poverty" standards.....
Graft and corruption permeates every level of society from the Barangay to Manila

The imports match the exports..... meaning we exist on overseas workers and expatriates
Tourism is hardly a factor. The "average" income is $700 annually.....and that includes the billions made by the oligarchy....meaning there are vast numbers of poor people making almost nothing..... I know university graduates ....Engineers....that must get jobs driving truck in Saudi Arabia to support their families.... Business men hire employees for only six months....fire them.....then rehire them to avoid paying social security and keep them "temporary".... there are no effective unions and employees are UNDER paid and abused.... Only 26% of the work force pays their taxes..... they have a minimum wage but it is a joke.... almost no one pays it.....
The justice system is pretty much up for sale....I have known murderers and people who committed manslaughter go scott free after bribing the system....vigilante justice is common.... had NINE journalist in my town murdered in three months....50+ journalist were murdered in Mindanao in one attack.... there are people with private armies....
During a resent election a truck load of voters were slaughtered by the opposition
Foreign venture capital is scared away by corruption..... the economic power is centralized in Manila.....and the oligarchy like it stagnant.... they like being in control.... the hinderland is where the peasants live.... and they pretty much reserve power and money for themselves.....



I have lived here SEVEN years....I love the Philippines and I agree it has the "untapped" potential to be the leading nation in Asia.... it is a unique and VERY beautiful country..... but it has a long way to go before it can rise to G20 status.... unless there is another EDSA....and this time we take command and get rid of the TRAPOS....we will NEVER be G 20..... or even G 100
