Solar Energy Per Square Meter

Dianne Said:

Thermodynamics heat loss coefficient of a box. Solar Energy?

We Answered:

If you're trying to find the incident radiant heat rate or power, you need to estimate the steady-state heat loss rate of the box which is A * ?T / K. This will equal the incident rate. ?T is the air temperature difference inside and outside the box and should be taken when inside and outside temps stabilize. (The water temp. can be used as an indicator of inside temp but will lag the air temp. It's better to leave the water out.) Estimating A/K will be the hard part. To find K you'll need to look up box-material, window and insulation R values and adjust for thicknesses you are using, and then scale by the box and window areas and sum the results; something like A/K = Awin/Rwin + Abox/(Rbox+Rins).

Joyce Said:

What is the Solar energy flux at the distance of the Earth?

We Answered:

L = 3.826e26 watts = luminous power of the sun
F = L / (4? d²)
d = distance from the sun
d = 1 AU = 1.496e11 meters
F = 1360 W m?²
