Your teacher was right, there is a sequence of tenses. Every verb in that sentence is past tense, even would (here it is the past tense of will, not some other tense as someone else has stated). They way I was taught, woke should be past tense as well.

However, there are two opposing views about it: see the link regarding natural and attracted sequence of tenses in English.

Your child's teachers probably ascribe to the natural sequence of tenses method, but I believe that only applies in cases of universal truths.

I'm not quite a believer yet. I love the concept and have for many years. I've been aware of its possibilities for a long time. But, the reality is that it takes energy to produce energy, and hydrogen technology does not escape that equation. I do think a combination of technologies is the best solution, such as ever-improving battery technology (go Chevy Volt!), solar, wind, hydrogen, bio fuels, and even conventional fossil fuels. We need to have vehicles and infrastructure that allow this flexibility. Chevy Volt (which I believe allows for hydrogen) seems to come closest to that concept. That's just my take in it.
