Check out government subsidies. Don't count on people investing in the new forms of energy just on the sole act of doing something for the environment. Make sure you focus on the financial aspect, reliability, selling of carbon credits, independence from the grid and selling excess power to the power company. Also, learn to hire people who are smarter than you. Even when you know what they are talking about, act like you are intrigued and they will bend over backwards to help you.

Well you just don't move to Texas and start an energy company with power plants, pumps and distribution. That is, unless you have a billion dollars to start with. If you wanted to start small there are a number of oil wells for sale in Texas and Louisiana (and just about everywhere in the 48 states). Of course, you need to know the business before you jump into something like that. You could also try to buy some property for speculation and drill your own well. Chances are about zero that you'll discover new oil in the south.

The best thing to do is start an alternative energy company. You don't really have to do anything but collect grants from the government. That's how people are currently getting rich in energy. If you don't feel guilty about stealing from taxpayers then this might be a good option.
