Watts are a unit of power. A 550W power supply can provide a maximum of 550 watts to your computer parts, total. The computer may use less. If it were using 500 watts for an hour, that would be 500 watt hours of energy. A typical house might use 20,000 watt hours a day (20 kwh). Your car might use the same, if it's electric.

1 gigawatt (1,000,000,000 watts) is about what the local nuclear power plant can produce. It's a little less than 10% of what South East Michigan uses.

It looks like the Earth needs 11 or 12 terawatts (12,000,000,000,000). The Sun produces about 750 watts per square meter. Assume they are 10% efficient at converting sunlight into electrical power. Assume they run half the day. So 12e12 watts * (1 / 750 watts/m^2) * 10 *2 = 320,000,000,000 square meters. That's a square area only 565,685 km on a side. Park it in a desert somewhere and you're fine. You can reduce the area by making the cells more efficient.

A house using 20 kwh needs 20000 / 750 * 10 * 2 = 533 square meters. That's maybe 23 meters square. That's bigger than my house. However, by using passive solar heating instead of electricity, we can improve the efficiency by a large amount. By improving insulation, we cut power requirement further. By using better (more expensive) solar cells, we can reduce the area required. And it can just about be done on the roof of the house. It would help to live in the desert.

For now anyway. Usage is expanding. You should distribute this area over the Earth so that some of it is always in sunlight. You should run cables everywhere so everyone everywhere has power. Otherwise you have to store some energy for use at night. Who knows? Maybe it's cheaper to store it and have smaller grids.

There's also cost. Solar cells cost money. And, they don't last forever. By the time you're done building this, you have to start replacing it.

Fantastic observation. Yes all this is true.. out biggest problem is that we dont think analytically anymore.. we have been boxed in to believe whatever they want us to believe..humans need to realize that even though we are incredibly powerful beings that can accomplish much.. we are not special.. we are significant to the universe as the universe is significant to ourselves.. but.. if we had to be wiped out today it would not make a difference in the grand scheme of things.. as we are just another organism blessed with the gift of life... always remember people..this is a gift we have..not a privilege.. we are here and we can easily be wiped out.. we need to question, we need to doubt.. we need to understand and be humble..
