Hi Andrew,
advantages of solar energy would include the absence of pollution, the absence of impact on global warming, and the fact that once you have purchased the equipment the fuel is free. Although there is the rather large problem we call "Sunset" there are ideas for storing the Sun's energy by means such as converting some of it into Hydrogen which is then fed into fuel cells at night or in cloudy weather.
As for it's practicality in Colorado, there is no need for pipelines to transport it or facilities to store it. Both of which can potentially explode either by accident or intentionally. I'm not aware of anyone who has ever been killed by a photo cell! Also, Colorado is a rather large place, at least from the perspective of a guy in MA!
