If you're thinking of solar hot water, when the roof is off, you'll want to check the underlying rafters to make sure they're strong enough to support the kind of thermal system you want.

If you're thinking of solar electric, no special work is needed. There are already mounting systems designed to go on standing-seam metal roofs.

If you're in North America, you'll want a south-facing part of the roof, of course.

It could be worth it to contact a solar installer before changing your roof, to ask if there are any other considerations.

1. Live-cycle cost is approximately 5x the cost of grid power.
2. Wind/hail can destroy your investment before it pays for itself.
3. You rely on tax incentives which are really getting someone else to pay for your stuff -- moral question
4. You could have invested in something else like ground-source heat pumps (GSHP) which may save you more money much sooner than solar.
5. You could invest in GSHP and when you re-coup your investment in about 5 years you will be able to put up better solar cells at a cheaper price, assuming the technology keeps improving, and have lower energy demand (because you have the GSHP cooling your home in the summer).

Fortunately, there are several energy alternatives available each with advantages and disadvantages with solar energy being one of the more popular choices. But there aren’t many people hooked on to the technology which is why solar training is very important.

Solar energy was realized as a clean alternative source of energy way back in ancient times and then later on solar power plants were installed in several areas to give clean power to homes. While it is a clean energy source, it definitely isn’t the cheapest and that discouraged people from embracing the technology. Then when digital mobile technology started to get popular, solar energy was revisited as more and more people started to purchase these gadgets. The focus was on how often people use electricity to charge their batteries for their mobile devices and now people are trying to find ways for solar energy to charge those devices instead.
