Solar energy comes as heat and light. So we can use both forms of energy to help us. The light energy can be converted by using photo voltaic cells to convert light energy to electric energy. This technology is still in infant stages. We have not been able to do it efficiently with low cost. There had been reported success of using sunlight to get Hydrogen from sea water by using a catalyst.
The second is the heat energy. This is very popular in countries where we have good sunshine. We use to heat water by having solar water heaters. These heaters having good heat transfer surface and hence can efficiently heat water for daily uses. So also we can use heaters to dry foods etc.
