I see the key words in your question to be "Make Homemade".
It is much easier for the home hobbyist to make a homemade wind turbine out of commonly acquired parts over making solar cells. Solar cells are the term for photovoltaic components. Solar water heating would be easier still.

Probably start with a solar powered fan.
These can be obtained from any good boat chandlery.
You may have to gear the fan motor to obtain a slower movement.
The carousel would need to be fairly lightweight so you'd probably need stiff cardboard or balsa wood.
The figures would probably be the hardest to obtain although I'm sure you could use something different like toy dinosaurs for a bit of fun.

Solar power is really only good for water heating and at that it will only get it to about 60 degrees.

Wind Power is excellent, if you have enough wind. You will need to get your wind recorded for a good 6 months to a year, to really find out if its goona be worth putting one up. They are not cheap and you dont one sitting in your yard doing nothing.

Personally i think the Wind Spire by Mariah Power is the best available.

I looked at home made energy and their competition earth for energy. I chose the latter after some chatting in forums like this one. There were people telling that home made was hard to read wile earth4 was not. I bought the earth4 manual and have built two solar panels - it was pretty easy. I recommend them
