Careers in Solar Energy?

We Answered:

The only other career in solar energy is as a graduate student assistant to a scientist performing primary research at your nearest research University. Eventually, you can become a solar energy researcher yourself and compete for grants with which to do studies. You can study solar engineering at that university and become an engineer yourself, or you can find a business that is making and installing the systems and get a job doing it. It depends on your intellectual and mechanical abilities and what skills you can master, what kind of job you can wind up with.

what careers can i study in solar energy?

We Answered:

I think it's great that you want to enter a field in renewable energy. The more that people can become interested in green technology, the more we can start taking the steps to reducing our carbon footprint.

Since you have a relationship with Merced College, I would suggest reaching out to your career services department and letting them know what direction you would like to go in and see if they can help provide some direction. Because they are academic advisors, they should be able to provide you with some direction.

I can't say I know a lot about solar energy, but I do know one of the fastest growing sources of energy in the world is winder energy. It provides clean, renewable electricity that is both economical and environmentally friendly The Bureau of Labor Statistics has estimated that wind energy production increased by 21 percent in 2007 alone.

Good luck to you!

Would a Masters by Research get me into a research career in Renewable Energy?

We Answered:

How engineering/physics based is your Renewable Energy degree?

I was able to get a Masters research project in solar power with a BSc in Physics. Solar Photovoltaics are very heavy on physics, but you could probably get in there using chemistry or engineering.

Solar thermal and concentrating solar power will probably want an engineering bent most of all.

How can I start a career in Solar energy?

We Answered:

You can enter this field as a "helper", and get on-the-job training. If you get a Union paying job, you will need more experience, normally.

In meanwhile, best to take all the shop courses you can in high school, including woodwork, and electricity. Taking physics class, or some math classes will help you get ready to be a supervisor someday too.

Talk to both your shop teachers and school counselors for advice about Solar Energy jobs in your area.
