Solar Charger For Batteries

Mildred Said:

Has anyone used a solar battery charger?

We Answered:

I've used one of these chargers for my car which would often sit for a week between uses each winter. However, I needed to go out clear the snow from the windows to make sure that the soloar panel was uncovered.

If your battery has a 10AH rating and the battery is fully charged then your bike / alarm will have 5,000 hours (208 days) of power, consuming 48 milliamps a day. This solar charger should have no trouble replacing that charge in the battery plus compensating for the battery's cold weather inefficiency (it takes up to double the power in cold weather because the chemistry in the battery works slower in the cold).

It's unlikely but you may need a charge controller to stop the solar cell from over-charging the batteries, should you have a couple really sunny days.

Freddie Said:

what minimum recommended wattage for a 12v solar battery charger would keep a caravan battery topped up?

We Answered:

If it has a full charge it won't take much to maintain that charge!
A 5 watt like this should do nicely:
