Solar 12v Battery Chargers

Delores Said:

Is it possibly to charge a 12v 100ah sealed battery when it is only giving off 5.5v?

We Answered:

Is it a wet or dry battery? If you really like to inspect what is going on you have to open it carefully in a well ventilated place, use protecting gloves and glasses and no children around. You can look at the connections between the cells and see/test if they are still functional. if not you can try to rewire the cells. Possibly some cells are dry(in case of wet cells) or are "dead" for both wet and dry cells. You also can inspect which cells are working by disconnecting groups and test what the voltage and amperage is of these groups. Repairing the battery is not really an options when cells are dead, it is a lot of work to get everything to replace the dead cells, thus not recommended. The answers with the funeral/disposal options you already received are common sense. Only if you like to learn more about batteries then dig into the How stuff Works website and learn about batteries http://www.howstuffworks.com/battery.htm and start inspecting carefully the battery you have with in the back of your mind that at the end it still ends up as a disposal.

Charging 48v forklift batteries with 12v alternator?

We Answered:

Nope. They have to be charged with a 48v source.
The only way to charge them with 12v sources is to put (4) 12v power sources in series.

I need help on an Electrical Circuit Design ( 12V DC )?

We Answered:

For starters, you need a double pole, 3 position switch.

In Position "1" - pole 1 connects the solar cell to the battery. Probably with a diode or whatever, for night time when the battery voltage exceeds solar cell voltage. Pole 2 is not connected.

In Position "2" - pole 1 disconnects the solar cell. Pole 2 connects the cell to the meter.

In Position "3" - pole 1 disconnects the solar cell. Pole 2 connects the Battery to the meter.

Hope that helps ...

How would I identify positive and negative wires on male cigarette lighter plug?

We Answered:

the center conductor of the plug is the positive. the side spring is the negative. use an ohm meter to trace which wire goes to these terminals.

the other way is to plug back into the car outlet and use the volt meter to find the plus wire. careful because since you stripped the wire end, if it touches car ground you will create a short.
