Yes, they are quite expensive. However, extra battery packs for your laptop cost about $100 or more as well. So this may NOT be that bad of an idea.

Makes sense to me, the laptop power supply is 19V, the DVD player may be 9 to 12 volts.

You are not going to fix this yourself, it will cost as much as a new DVD player to have someone repair it for you.

Send the DVD player off to the great landfill in the sky and buy a new one.
